Howard was founded in 1870, and it was incorporated as a city in 1877. Howard was named after Oliver O. Howard, a Union Army general during the Civil War and founder of Howard University. Come to the historic downtown for a nostalgic step back in time on the original red brick streets. Attractions in Howard include 8 museums with a huge collection in the Doll Museum, Agricultural, K.T. Oil Filling Station, and One Room School House buildings. Recreation includes Jackson Park Walking Path, Polk Daniels Lake, and 2 city parks. Howard has 3 uniquely different restaurants: Poplar Pizza, Toot’s, and Sweet & Spicy. There is an Old-Fashioned Soda Fountain, a historic Old Bank Building, Cookson’s Hardware and D&M Guns, Batson’s Drug Store and Family Market, Get Fit Fitness Center, Buck’s Cabins, Carey Auto, Signer’s Garage, and an amazing City Library.
